Which Knife is Best?

If you’re hunting or spending any serious amount of time outdoors, you’ll need a good knife. Hunters use their knives to prepare traps, skin and dress game and to protect themselves. Having the proper knife can make your hunting experience much more efficient and pleasant. There is a wide variety of knives on the market and a large range in quality. You could spend $10.00 on a knife, or $200.00. That’s how much diversity there is in the market. But no matter the price, you need a knife that will meet your needs. The best hunting knife in terms of quality and durability is the Buck fixed-blade knife. Buck knives are made of the highest caliber. Their design makes them easy and intuitive. The handle is comfortable and smart. With a Buck hunting knife, you’ll be ready to take care of any knife needs you’ll have while you’re on the road.

A Basic Guide: Knife Care 101

Caring for your knife is a mandatory part of tool maintenance. Taking good care of arguably your most important survival tool ensures its quality and longevity for years to come. Knife care and maintenance are simple, quick and necessary. Let’s cover the basics to make sure that your survival knife lasts you for years to come and is there when you need to use it;

The Rules of Knife Care

  1. Don’t misuse your knife: The worst mistake novices make is to use their knife in ways that it is not intended. Knives are not meant to work as a hammer, a screwdriver or a toothpick. However fun it may be, most knives are also not meant to be thrown. Using your knife in any way that it is not meant to be used is going to cause damage and lead to the premature degradation of your tool.
  2. Keep your knife clean: After every use, wipe your entire knife down, handle included. Simply using running water and a tiny quantity of soap will do. Do not ever scrub your knife with anything abrasive (physical or chemical). Once you have washed it, dry it and put it away. This step is crucial for knife care rust prevention. Even the highest quality stainless steel blades can rust in favorable conditions.
  3. Keep your knife oiled: Using a little knife care mineral oil or even WD-40 after the knife has been cleaned is great for protecting a steel blade from rust and debris. If the handle is made from wood or leather, a small amount of oil is also usable on the handle. If the handle is plastic, do not use oil, it will result in a slippery handle and unsafe conditions. Oil should only be used on steel, other metals may get scuffed or scratched.
  4. Keep your knife waxed: A light coat of hand-rubbed wax is favorable for blade protection. Much like the oil, a little goes a long way. Renaissance wax is good, but using an all-natural Carnauba wax with no synthetic polymers. Wax is generally preferred over oil as with some materials, oil will attract dust and could weaken the sheath.
  5. Keep your knife sharp: Most accidents occur because of a dull knife. Keep your knife sharp and keep your fingers attached! If you don’t know how to sharpen your own knife, there are plenty of YouTube tutorials. You can also invest in a professional sharpening.
  6. Store your knife properly: If you have a small pocket knife, remember that keys and pocket change can dent, scratch and otherwise compromise the integrity of your knife. If you have a folding knife, keep the locking latch clean and the pivot lightly oiled. Proper knife storage boils down to common sense. Protect your tool from the elements with its sheath and keep it stored in a dry place.

What Kind of Knife: Fixed or Folding

Before you invest in a knife, you’ll need to discern what type of knife will best meet your needs. Fixed blade knives are generally stronger and better suited for heavy duty work. They are easier clean because they don’t have as many joints and crevices. Fixed knives are also more reliable and stable because of their simplistic design. Fixed knives make some people feel uncomfortable because they aren’t as safe as folding knives during transportation. You’ll have to access your personal level of comfortability before you buy a fixed sheath knife.

Folding knives are very popular for general hunting purposes because they are familiar and safe feeling. There are two different types of the folding knife:

Lock-blades and pocket-knives. Traditional pocket-knives have a clip point and Spey blades that make skinning and dressing small game easier. Pocket-knives are convenient and easy for small jobs that need to be completed in the field. Lock-blades are safer because they help protect against blade slippage. Some lock-blade knives are designed for single-hand opening and use, which is the most popular version for hunters.

If you are comfortable carrying a fixed blade knife on you through rugged terrain, most hunters would suggest getting one. It’s the most versatile, traditional, heavy duty and trustworthy choice. But it’s not for everyone. If you’d prefer a blade that could safely tuck away, then there are many folding blades on the market that will get the job done.

Consider the Point

It might surprise some people to learn that there are dozens to varying blade point types to choose from when searching for a hunting knife. While there are dozens of options, there are three main point types that will cover most needs.

  • Clip Point: Clip point blades have a concave tip, which gives the knife the appearance of having the end “clipped off.” The clip point is designed for quicker, more fine cuts. The clip point is great for deer field dressing.
  • Drop Point: Drop point blades are convex in design and they are generally thicker than clip point knives. The thickness of this blade makes it stronger than other knives. It is a good deer skinning knife because it is less likely to accidentally puncture the hide of the deer with a drop point.
  • Spear Point: Spearpoint blades are symmetrically aligned blades where the edges of the blade rise and fall in equal measure creating a very balanced knife. These knives are very controllable for small cuts, but they aren’t the most popular choice for hunters.

Some hunting knives today are hybrids of clip/drop/spear points. Consider the individual components of a knife’s blade to be sure that it will meet your individual needs. You might also consider whether you really need more than one knife to adequately cover all of your hunting needs. Often, a hunter will need to carry multiple knives in order to complete all of the diverse skinning, dressing, and cutting jobs that arise in the field.

How Does it Feel?

You can research and consider all of the design elements of a knife, but if it doesn’t feel good in your hand then it won’t serve you well. Some knives have wood or bone handles, which look great and are generally warm to the touch in cold weather. But most wood and bone handles have comprehensive metal trimming which can make them seem just as cold as a metal handled knife. If you do a lot of hunting in cold climates, owning a metal knife might not be incredibly comfortable. Synthetic handles aren’t the prettiest or most exciting knife handle style, but they are warm with good grip and they are often cheaper.

Remember Safety

Once you’ve found a material or handle that feels good in your hand, make sure that the proper safety design elements are there. For heavy duty fixed-knives or strong folding-knives, there should be a thumb and finger stop or a thick contour and to protect your hand. If your knife doesn’t have these safety elements built it, your hand could slide down the handle while you’re gutting game. The result can be some pretty nasty cuts.

You should never be using a hunting knife if you don’t know what you’re doing. All hunting knives were designed to cut into thick and strong animal hides, so if they aren’t afforded the proper respect then they can do some serious damage. An important part of safely using a hunting knife is to understand all of the various parts of the knife. Understanding the elements of the knife and the way the design works will help you make smart and safe decisions. Then seek the counsel of an expert. They will show you the ropes. It’s never smart to handle a sharp tool/weapon without proper training

Taking the time to properly care for your best hunting knife is important! Without proper knife care, you can take all that time you spent researching the best survival knife and all that money you spent to buy it and just throw it out the window. Maintaining this crucial survival tool is simply a mandatory step for any responsible survivalist and it should be taken seriously.

A full tang is imperative when it comes to a true survival knife as it provides extra stability. A full tang means that the metal continues the full length of the knife, from the tip to the end of the handle. The tang may or may not be the full width of the handle. What is a full tang and why is it important?

Another advantage of a full tang is that the knives are usually well balanced as the same metal is solid through the handle as opposed to a folding knife which has a set of light scales on the back end, or a partial tang where the metal is not balanced and therefore is very tip heavy which is useful in some situations but for the most part a balanced knife is significantly more useful.

Full Tang Knife Product Reviews

Fallkniven Kraton A1Z

The Fallkniven Kraton A1Z is a disgustingly strong knife. If you have any doubts about that you best full tang survival knife reviewsshould view its A1 Destruction Test video on YouTube. This blade is one that should be added to a collection but not as a showpiece, this is a workhorse type of knife. It is razor sharp, able to chop, split, and notch wood with no hesitation and retains its edge well enough to field dress a moose and remove the pelt in a single piece.

There are very few, if any, issues with this knife and it is well worth its price tag. I can not fault the quarter-inch thick blade, the full-tang nor the metal used, therefore the issue with this knife is the same as the next few to come: the sheath. The sheath is an easy problem to fix as there are many aftermarket sheaths available for this monster of a knife.

Smith and Wesson Homeland Security

This is a large knife which is very solid no matter how you look at it. It looks solid, it feels heavy asurvival knife full tangnd it performs magnificently. This is a knife designed to break through whatever you put in front of it, and the back is more than capable of notching wood for that nice dry shelter you may need.

The sheath is a tactical nylon with an incorporated pouch. Inside this pouch is a sharpening stone and there is still room for other necessities to be added, for instance, a firestarter.

The drawback to this knife would be its handle. The handle is strong and solid yet is not shaped to fit nicely in your hand and will make you consider using a nice thick pair of gloves.

Schrade SCHF16 Re-Curve Tanto Drop-Point

This little knife features a 2 ¾ inch high carbon stainless steel blade featuring a notched clip and tanto point. The scales are grooved to allow the better grip when doing detail work which this knife appears to be designed for, this will not help chop down thick branches. The back end of the knife has a lanyard hole and is verknife blanks full tangy solid making it useful for a window breaker.

The sheath that comes with this knife is plastic with a very tight lock, that blade will not accidentally be dropped anytime soon. One may actually question whether the lock is really required on a knife of this size, however, that question is answered once the blade is drawn. The blade itself is razor sharp upon arrival and holds an edge with impressive dignity.

The drawback to this knife is also the thing that makes it such a versatile knife – the size. As is it small, logs are going to win against it. This is why I would recommend it as a secondary knife because the large knives for all they are good at, lack the finesse this knife (or any other small knife) offers.

Cold Steel SRK Kraton San Mai III

The Cold Steel SRK Kraton is a large, very sharp, very tough knife. Cold Steel features its own blend of super steel in the San Mai III which has been around for over 3 decades with very little change as they believe it if is nfull tang bowie knifeot broke, don’t fix it. After all, this steel is known for holding a keen edge, and should that edge happen to dull with thorough use the blade is incredibly easy to sharpen.

The blade on this knife is a full 6 inches, weighs over 8 ounces, which makes it large but still compact and light enough to throw in a hiking backpack where both space and weight are a premium. It can handle dealing with all aspects of hunting, dealing with fair sized logs (although I would not try anything over 5 inches), and the point is fine enough for that detail work.

It is difficult to find things to complain about with this blade. It was well researched and has stood the test of time. If I must find a drawback I would complain about the sheath as they are known for dulling the blade to a degree. This blade may be happier with a custom sheath to avoid this.

CRKT Chanceinhell

The CRKT Onion Chanceinhell is an exceptionally large knife with an overall length of 17.88 inches, 12 inches of which is the blade. It weighs over a pound and is more of a machete than your common survival knife. It features a carbon steel drop point blade designed to slice through anything in its path while maintaining a smooth powder coating which, unlike most coatings, takes a beating and does not wear off easily if at all. The handle has a rubber grip which fully engulfs the tang making this knife easy on the hands to use.

The disadvantages of this knife are minor if you are looking for something of this size. This is not something I would use for fine work as you will just get frustrated because, due to its size, it is rather awkward to maneuver. The other disadvantage would be its size. This is not a knife you would be able to just put in your pocket and off you go. Then again, if you are looking at this knife, you would be well aware of that from the first glance.

Blade Grind:-The blade grind is usually determined by materials used, the overall shape of the knife and how the knife should function. There are multiple forms of grinds from the hollow grind to the flat grind. The hollow grind is razor sharp yet requires significant care as it is fragile and requires stropping. The flat grind has a heavy spine and a very thin yet strong edge which holds an edge with ease and little maintenance.Knives are as personal as one’s clothing. All blades come with different sizes, weights, materials, shapes, and uses. As these are all every day carry knives, they all have similarities but they all have their nuances as well. Price does not always dictate quality. To find the best EDC knife for yourself you need to have a rough idea of what you like. The easy place to starts with appearance and style. Once this has been sorted out it is much easier to move on to weights, brands and what you are willing to spend.

BladePoint:- The blade point is also determined by purpose and dictates the shape of the knife. Two commonly used points are the drop point and the tantō. The drop point tip has a convex arc from the spine, is very strong and is very easy to control. Hunting knives are a good example of this as it is primarily for slicing and slashing. The tantō tip is very straight and takes full advantage of the strength of a full flat grind. This provides a very strong edge which is excellent when working with thicker and harder materials

Benchmade 940-1 (Over $200)

The Benchmade 940-1 is lightweight and compact compromising neither strength nor quality. This knife is very versatile with its folding design, S90V reverse tantō stainless steel blade, and carbon fiber scales.

best everyday carry knife reviews

The 940-1’s predecessor is the Benchmade 940 which was on the market for well over a decade proving that this is a blade which has stood the test of time and use. Its unique look is eye-catching and draws a prospective buyer to it over and over.

The one drawback to the Benchmade 940-1 is its price. Priced over $200 it is not a knife you would buy just to “see if you like it.” This is a purchase one makes after careful consideration and one that is designed to last decades if not a lifetime.

All in all, the Benchmade 940-1 is a solid investment if you are looking for a reverse tantō style, versatile knife that is as good on paper as it is in real life. The fact it is made in the USA instead of being outsourced is just icing on the cake.

Spyderco ParaMilitary2 (Under $200)

The Spyderco ParaMilitary2 is another versatile blade made in the USA. This knife is on the larger sbest knife for everyday carryide with a drop point blade typical of Spyderco blades. It does come in different coatings for those who don’t like the look of the satin finish there is a diamond-like carbon coating available.

The ParaMilitary2’s predecessor is the ParaMilitary which was on the market for years before this knife was released in 2010. It was slightly larger in the handle which made it less ergonomic and a little more cumbersome. The shape of the ParaMilitary2 is almost an hourglass shape which allows for a deep hold when you want to do some detail work.

It is hard to come up with any drawbacks for the ParaMilitary2 as the quality speaks for itself. This is a staple for any serious collectors for its versatility, value, and quality.

Kershaw Cryo II (Under $100)

The Kershaw Cryo II is a modestly priced knife which upholds Kershaw’s exacting standards with its design and the materials used. This blade is comparable to knives much more expensive than itself and is a pleasant surprise to be found in the under $100 category.

The Cryo II is a heavier knife than its award-winning predecessor the Cryo as it is quite thick allowing Kershaw Cryo II everyday pocket knifefor a change to the current trend for those who prefer a knife to have more substance. The blade comes pre-sharpened and is tight in the scales which always imparts confidence as the last thing one wants is a loose blade or a failing locking mechanism. One drawback to the Cryo II is that the thumb studs are not very effective when attempting to deploy the blade. The other is that the weight is quite a bit heavier than most people are looking for in a knife, for those who are looking for a more hefty knife, this will only be a plus.

In all, the Cryo II is a knife exceeds the standards of other knives in its price category and offers the Kershaw quality without the price. As it comes in both plain stainless steel and BlackWash coating, one would expect the price to be much higher than it is.

Gerber Paraframe II (under $50)

For those looking for an EDC knife at without the premium price tag, the Gerber Paraframe is a terrific option.

The Gerber Paraframe II is an economical option for those looking for a light, the tantō styled tactical-styled knife that is easy to carry. It is lightweight with a 3.5-inch blade with black titanium nitride coating to prevent rust.

This is a very attractive and sleek knife that catches the eye of buyer and onlooker alike. The blade has a severyday carry knivesmooth tip which allows for detail work while the serrated section of the blade allows for work that requires “chewing.”

A couple drawbacks to this knife are that it is designed for right-handed people. This is not generally an issue, however, for those who are left-handed, the knife does come out backward and the unlock mechanism is only on the one side so it adds a bit of confusion and two hands.

This is a good knife for the price and as a starter knife. Depending on what you are looking at doing with the knife, this may be a great place to start. It excels at light daily use and looks great while you’re using it.

This knife is also available in a smaller size and has hence been dubbed the mini Paraframe II.

Case Sod Buster Jr. (under $30)

The Case Sod Buster Jr. is another blade made in the USA, has a very affordable price tag and has either a carbon steel or stainless steel blade (depending on the option selected).

Its relatively small blade and slender scales make this a convenient knife to slip into your pocket and off you go. This design has been around for over 2 decades and has definitely withstood the test obest edc knifef time. The blade is held tightly and it does not slip despite not having a lock.

It is hard to find any issues with this knife as it is amazing quality for the price. If I had to find one thing wrong with it, I would say that the edge may not hold as well as some harder steel but that is not to say it will not hold an edge, depending on use any knife will need to be sharpened.

This great little knife is one I would suggest for a graduation present, to have around the house and for everyday use. Again, it is nice that it is not made of outsourced materials which allow for the strict quality standards to be upheld.

Benchmade Griptilian Combo Edge

The Benchmade Griptilian Combo Edge is a full-sized folding tactical blade which, despite having a hollow ground edge with a deep belly, utilizes the 154CM stainless steel’s strength to keep an edge which is razor sharp and wears well. These knives carry the same warning any Benchmade knife has in that they come pre-sharpened anbest knife for hiking campingd are ready to use from the moment you unwrap the box.

This is a larger knife with a 3.5-inch blade, is very light and agile. Not everyone would be comfortable with the Griptilian in their pocket. The scales are a lightweight yet durable plastic over a stainless steel liner which adds the appeal of this knife as it is so light yet the blade does not come into contact with the plastic, and the liner allows for added stability during use. It is hard to find a drawback on this knife and the only ones I can easily find is the size and the price.

It is a little hard to use as a pocket knife in that it is over 4.5” in length when closed. If you fall in love with this blade you may consider getting the Griptilian Mini which boasts the same quality in a more convenient size. This is also not a gas station quick buy, this knife does cost more than the average folding knife and what you are paying for is a quality blade, made in the USA so that all steps can be inspected to make sure that quality is not taken for granted.

Cold Steel Recon 1

The Cold Steel Recon 1 is the new version of the Recon. Released in 2010, the Recon 1 learned aboCold Steel Recon 1 knifeut the drawbacks from its predecessor and worked hard to improve on an already good knife to create a truly great one. It is sleeker, lighter and has a much stronger lock to ensure no fingers get caught accidentally while maintaining a truly affordable price.

Boasting a 4-inch blade and an overall length of 9 ¾ inches, the Recon 1 is not what most people would carry in their pocket. This is a very solid knife which comes at either a clip point or an American tanto shape. The scales are designed to fit easily in your hand and provide an important non-slip grip. The blade is strongly held and is very durable as is the rest of the knife.

The main drawback with this knife is that the black coating on the blade comes off easily with use. Once it is all off, the knife cleans up well and it does not create usage issues. If you are looking for a display case knife you may want to get two, one to use and one to display and at the price, it is not an impossibility.

CRKT M16-13ZE

The CRKT M16 is a versatile knife that is commonly seen by anyone who spends a lot of time in the backcountry. It is versatile and comes in many different sizes but for this review, I have chosen the M16-13ZE.

CRKT M16-13ZE hiking knife

This blade weighs a mere 3.7 ounces with an overall length of 9.25 inches making this a knife you won’t miss. The bright orange scales make that unlikely as well. The 13ZE option of this knife comes with an AutoLAWKS safety mechanism, a built-in seat belt cutter and a Tungsten carbide window breaker so that in an emergency you are covered.

The one drawback I would point out would be that the steel on this blade is relatively soft and therefore will lose an edge after it has been used. This is not nearly as soft as the AUS4, however, the AUS8 is not a very hard steel, therefore, is easy to sharpen although you may find yourself doing this more often than with some of the harder steels.

Gerber Bear Grylls Survival Ultimate Knife

The Gerber Bear Grylls Ultimate Survival Knife is a heavy-duty full-tang knife that is large, heGerber Bear Grylls Ultimate Serrated Knifeavy and definitely a knife that would find many uses for an extended hike or even camping. The blade has a drop point and has the option of being either a fine-edge or half-serrated.

This knife also includes a rope lanyard which has an emergency whistle attached, a diamond blade sharpener, a spark rod included with the sheath and a square striker notch in the butt end of the knife. This knife will provide you with all the tools necessary to create a fire from the feather stick to the spark itself.

The downside to this knife is that it is very heavy and bulky and so it is not something that you would take with you on most hikes without other gear. The other issue is the sheath itself in that the loop to attach it is placed in an awkward location so when it is attached to your belt it has a tendency to rub.

In all this is a well-made knife which has been designed to provide everything you may need in a knife for an emergency situation. Combine this with the price and it is definitely a knife to have a look at.

Victorinox Swiss Army Adventurer

Swiss Army Knife, it is a name that speaks quality and is known in most households and has been

Victorinox Swiss Army Adventurer hiking knifearound for many years. The Adventurer Pocket Knife is no exception to this. This is a large 3 ½ inch blade housed in a tiny and compact set of scales which also hide a can opener, bottle opener, large screwdriver, wire stripper, reamer with sewing eye, a Phillips screwdriver, tweezers, toothpick and a key ring.

This is a tool that, despite its size and weight of a mere 2.8 ounces, can handle most situations you may throw at it. Whether there is a need for cutting branches or dealing with a sliver, this knife can handle it.

The one thing about this knife is that it is rather large if you are more familiar with the Tinker or Classic sized Swiss Army Knives; however, as it is less than 5 inches when fully folded it is not unreasonable for this knife to be pocketed for both the longer and shorter walks through the woods.

Best Camping Knife Review

Everyone who camps knows a knife is an essential tool to have with you. It has multiple uses in the woods and one may actually save your life, although hop, fully you will never be in such a situation! I will be reviewing several knives used for camping. You can find all of them on Amazon.com and I will include price range and ratings.

About Camping Knives

There are many different types of knives out there and not everybody is looking for the same thing in a knife. More expensive isn’t necessarily the best quality. Camping knives can have a single or double-sided blade and some even have a serrated edge to use as a saw.

Folding knives

These are knives with a hinge where the blade meets the handle and the blade can fold back into the handle. Also known as an army knife, these knives are good if you plan on keeping it in your pocket, bag, or don’t have a sheath to cover the blade.

Sometimes these knives also have other tools included such as a corkscrew, screwdriver, flashlight and/or file. This is good if you have need of multiple tools but can’t have the bulk of carrying that much. It will also decrease the size of the knife blade to make room for the other tools.

Sheath/Fixed Blade Knives

These are knives in a fixed position and they have a sheath (case) covering the blade to protect it. This sheath is usually soft and made of canvas, nylon or leather but can be hard and made of plastic or metal. They are usually worn on the belt with a clip. These knives more commonly have a part of the blade serrated or the spine partially serrated.

Often times, Sheath knives are used as a survival knife, whereas a folding knife will get more work as every day carry knife.

Camping Knife Sets

You can purchase a knife set as well if you need different sizes. These could come in handy to get into small spaces or to save time when cutting larger items. You can also buy folding knives that have a cutlery set in it, so you have a fork, spoon, and knife in one piece.

Camping Knife Uses

Common uses for a knife when camping will be cutting rope to tie down your tent or food up and out of reach of animals. Cutting sticks for kindling or sharpening them for roasting hot dogs and marshmallows (yum!). Cleaning and filleting fish. Possible defense from wild animals that you may come across. Don’t worry animals are more afraid of you!

Choosing a Camping Knife

The knife you pick will depend on what you need it for the most. You could go for the simple sheath knife which would be best if you don’t have many uses for it. If you are the kind of camper who likes to go for hikes you might consider a folding knife so you can keep it in your pocket.

Caring for your Camping Knife

It is best to have a way of sharpening your knife be it a whetstone or a handheld knife sharpener. These tend to have two angled stones forming a “V” that you pull the blade in between multiple times. It is very important to keep your camping knife sharp, it could save your life. Most knife blades are rust proof but it is best to keep the knife dry and in a safe place.

Has a sharp, fixed blade with the spine serrated? The handle is wrapped to give it grip. Includes a fire starter and sheath to cover when not in use. Good price and overall a sturdy looking knife. Scratches and nicks from dropping shouldn’t show on the bare metal finish. Would be nice if the handle wrappings were in a brighter color to make the knife easy to see in an emergency.Comes with an unlined nylon sheath means the blade tends to cut through the bottom. The included fire starter is a great bonus and works well. Solid knife made with one piece of steel means it can’t fall apart and is lightweight.
